There are various causes of compression to the spinal nerve. Lesions are typically the source, although adhesions that occur outside the cord itself are more typical than ones occurring within it.
Trauma can also cause compressive forces which lead to injury. Tumors and abscesses are another source which may result in pain progressing over several days or weeks.
A ruptured disc can also lead to compression, as can protrusions of bone or cartilage into the spinal canal. Even though the vast majority of people living in the United States will experience some type of back pain at one time or another during their lives, spinal cord compression is more uncommon but also much more serious.
